Headquartered in Walnut Creek, California, Valent U.S.A. Corporation is a leading crop protection firm serving the agricultural and non-crop products markets in North America. The mission of Valent is to develop, register and market innovative, technological solutions for crop production and pest management that deliver value for customers and stakeholders. At Valent, product stewardship begins with the recognition that the public has a right to a healthy, nutritious food supply and safe surroundings. We also realize the importance of protecting and preserving precious environmental resources for the benefit of future generations. Consequently, it is for the well-being of the public, our customers, our company and the industry at large that Valent complies with the letter—and the spirit—of all environmental, health and application laws.
Research and Development
Valent operates its own research laboratory in Dublin, California, near company headquarters. At this location, a team of scientists and research specialists develop product chemistry residue data, environmental fate data and formulations—all basic and essential research requirements for the development of new products, as well as the re-registrations and label expansions of existing products.
Before a new product can be sold, government agencies must agree that the product can be used safely and without unreasonable risk to people, non-target organisms and the environment when used as directed on the label. Generation of the environmental, health and safety data required by federal and state agencies for product registration is managed by scientific specialists at corporate headquarters and in the Valent Washington, D.C., office. All Valent products are continually reassessed by EPA and state agencies to ensure that safety data and labels meet the latest scientific and regulatory standards.

Preserving Urban Ash Trees
Since emerald ash borer (EAB) first appeared in the United States in 2002, this destructive invasive pest from Asia has killed tens of millions of ash trees across the Eastern and Midwestern states. Many more millions of trees are projected to be lost in the coming years as the infestation spreads.
To help preserve urban forests and enable municipalities to more effectively deal with tree removal, Valent in 2010 launched the Legacy Tree Project. Through this initiative, Valent has helped a number of municipalities in large population centers—in Chicagoland; Cincinnati; Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis and Milwaukee—see that treatment is an effective component of urban forest management.
Of the 1,886 Legacy Tree Project trees treated with Safari® Insecticide since 2010—supplied by Valent at no cost to the participating municipalities—over 94 percent remained in treatment as of May 2013, three years into the five-year program. In contrast, most untreated ash trees nearby are heavily infested or have died.
“The vast majority of Legacy Tree Project trees are still in treatment,” said Dr. Joe Chamberlin, field market development manager for Valent Professional Products. “The program is an acid test for whether treatment works. Many of the trees in the program are street trees, and they’re in stressed environments to begin with, which makes it even harder for treatment to work.”
In May 2013, Valent employees traveled to Naperville, Ill., along with customers and media to visit the front lines in the battle against EAB. In Naperville, the benefits of treatment were evident: while ash trees treated with Safari and other effective products were still flourishing, adjacent untreated trees were dead and awaiting removal.
“You can literally stand in the middle of a road, look at one side and see dead ash trees, and then look at the other side and see Legacy Tree Project ash trees alive and looking good,” said M. Skeet, a certified arborist for The Care of Trees, Inc., who oversees Legacy Tree Project applications in Naperville.
Through the Legacy Tree Project and Safari, Valent is making a difference in communities across the country, raising awareness about EAB, preserving trees for the benefit of future generations and helping to keep our country beautiful.
